Key questions to ask when taking on an allotment

When you’re offered the keys to your first allotment, it’s easy to get swept away with the excitement of it all – but rein it in for a minute or two and ask yourself a few crucial questions to make sure you know what you’re letting yourself in for.

Where’s the water supply? A tap should be within reasonable hosepipe reach – it’s rarely possible to save enough rainwater to keep you going year-round.

What state is it in? You’ll probably have to do some clearance work, as allotments are often left in quite a neglected state by their previous occupants. Some councils will help you clear it if it’s really bad.

How shady is it? Big trees and tall buildings cast such deep shade that it’s difficult to grow anything underneath. Try to find a plot that’s in sun for as much of the day as possible.

What are the rules? All allotment sites have a rule book: check first to find out whether you’re allowed to put up sheds and greenhouses, plant fruit trees or keep small-scale livestock like chickens or bees.

What weeds will you have to tackle? Even brambles can be defeated with persistence, but large clumps of Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed or mare’s tail should make you pause and probably say no.

How easily can you get there? You’ll want to visit your allotment often, so the closer it is, the better. If you’re on a bike or public transport, invest in a secure shed so you don’t have to cart heavy tools back and forth.

Check your plot out thoroughly before you start.
